The clock tower was built in 1878 as a theatrical hall of the Sapporo Agricultural School, now as Hokkaido University. The idea behind the tower came from the first vice Dean Dr. Clark. It was used as a facility where Agricultural School students conducted their military training and physical education, and also as the main hall where entrance ceremony and other ceremonies were held. Its main characteristic adopts the balloon-type wooden architecture, which is popular in the middle and western regions of America during the exploitation era. It is well-known for the red roof and white walls, but it’s said that the color was green when it was used as the public library. Tourists can learn about the history of the Clock Tower, including the incidents of the big fire, in the exhibition room on the first floor. And the second floor re-appears the martial art field; and you can enjoy the other clockworks made by HOWARD when you feel the atmosphere of history.
