Xiamen University

Xiamen University was created by Chen Jiageng (Tan kah kee) in 1921 who was entitled “Example of overseas Chinese; the Pride of our nation” by Mao Zedong. It is the first college created by an overseas Chinese in the history of Chinese education in modern times. It belongs to one of the Chinese trans-century high-level key colleges.

Covering an area of 1.46 million square meters, it is a campus with scholarly atmosphere and beautiful scenery. Attractions like Furong Lake and Lover Valley and so on inside the campus add more romantic and tranquil atmosphere to the place. The ancient buildings like dry wall and glass roof of Xiamen University are extremely special with characteristics which are the examples of combining the Chinese and the Western architectural style. Among the architectures, the Jiannan Auditorium and Shangxian Stadium are particularly grandeur. In June each year, when the phoenix flowers bloom, the whole campus is red as fire everywhere. However, with the graduates leaving soon, the scenery of the whole campus is enveloped by a sense of mawkishness but a pleasant atmosphere as well.

Within the college, there are Xiamen University Museum and Luxun Memorial Hall. A lot of documents about the development of human from prehistoric period to modern times are treasured in the Xiamen University Museum, especially the ancient antiques with a reflection of the Minnan and Taiwan cultures. And you can still find the special historic signs showing the communication between Quanzhou in ancient Fujian and the overseas. In Luxun Memorial Hall, there lists his former residence and four show rooms when he taught in Xiamen University, which shows us the experiences of Luxun.
