The Shuzhuang Garden built in 1913 is located on the tranquil island of Gulangyu. The master of the garden is Lin Erjia who is also called Shu Zang. The garden is named after him.
In the Sino-Japanese War of 1894, the Qing Imperial Court failed and Taiwan was given to Japan the next year. Lin Weiyuan and his son Shu Zang were unwilling to be the slaves of conquered people. Thus they removed to Gulangyu Island where Shu Zang built this garden.
Shuzhuang Garden is built by the seaside and hidden in the sea with caves beside the mountain and stones to fill the mountain. The garden and the scenery in the distance are integrated as a whole. The towers and pavilions are in different shapes with bridge and low fence. From the garden, you can set eyes on the sea while the waves are flapping the bank. Leaning against the fence at a distance, you will have a panoramic view of the mountains, deep caves, flowers on the path and lines of trees.
