Boston Common (also known as the Common) is a central public park in downtown Boston, Massachusetts, adjacent to the Public Garden. Dating from 1634, it is the oldest city park in the United States. Boston Common was used by many families as a cow pasture and was formally banned in 1830. The Common was also a camp by the British before the American Revolutionary War. Since 1830, the Common has served as a public park for all to use for formal or informal gatherings. It is a typical English garden and a rare urban oasis.
