There are two international airports in Shanghai—Pudong International Airport and Hongqiao International Airport. They are about 40km away from each other.

Shanghai Pudong International Airport (the code in IATA is PVG), situated in coastal areas of Jiangzhen, Shiwan and Zhuqiao of Pudong, covers an area of 40 square kilometers and is located 30 kilometers from the center of Shanghai. Now, there are about 560 flights running every day, a number accounting for around 60% of the total Shanghai flights. The domestic and foreign airline companies whose flights can arrive in Shanghai Pudong International Airport already reach 48, and its routes cover 73 international (regional) cities and 62 domestic cities. Here, the world’s first commercial magnetic levitation train line—Shanghai Maglev Demonstration Line connects Pudong International Airport Station with the Longyang Road Station of Shanghai Metro Line 2, and one way is approximately 8 minutes.

Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (the code in IATA is SHA) is located in the western suburbs in Shanghai city, and it is about 13 kilometers from the city center. Prior to the construction of Shanghai Pudong International Airport, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport has always been the busiest airport in China. There is a taxiway and a runway which is 3400 meters long and 57.6 meters wide. The parking apron is about 486 thousand square meters, and it can accommodate 66 airplanes. At present, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport is mainly responsible for the domestic departure and arrival and alternate international flights, and its daily flight departure number stand at 540 around on average. In 2016, the passenger throughput reached 40.4 million, ranking sixth among Chinese civil airports; cargo and mail transportation volume reached 428,907 tons, ranking eigth. The number of flights for taking off and landing was 261,981, ranking ninth domestically.

The second runway, the second terminal and the integrated transportation hub of Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport was finished well before the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. This expansion project was constructed in accordance with the design to transport 40 million visitors and 1 million tons of cargoes, and it mainly included a 4E grade closely spaced parallel runway, which is 3300 meters long and 60 meters wide, in the west side of the already existing runway, a terminal with 25 square meters and some supporting facilities.

The integrated transportation hub of Hongqiao Airport is a collection of express railways, intercity and urban rail transits, public buses and taxis as a modern and large-scale integrated transportation hub. The project was expected to be preliminarily finished at the end of 2009, and was successively put into use during the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. This transportation hub would greatly facilitate the transportation of passengers and cargo in the Yangtze River Delta region, especially for Jiangsu Province and Zhejiang Provinces.
