Glamorous Samarkand

  • Samarkand

    Samarkand is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, the second largest city of Uzbekistan and is of the same age as the city of Babylon or Rome. The history of Samarkand dates back to 2,750 years. The city is located on the left bank of the middle course of the Zarafshan river, in the center of the Republic of Uzbekistan.The city is noted for being an Islamic Centre for scholarly study.

  • Gur-e Amir (Tomb of the King)

    Located in downtown Samarkand, the mausoleum of Tamerlane and his heirs was built in the 15th century. The mausoleum is a world-renowned architectural treasure of central Asia, with a spectacular shape and bright colors, a large dome with a cone-shaped shape and a strong feature of Oriental Islamic architecture.

  • Ulugh Beg Observatory

    Ulugh Beg Observatory is one of the most important historical sites in Uzbekistan. It is located in the northeast suburb of Samarkand. It was built in 1428-1429 by Ulugh Beg, the grandson of Tamerlane, also famous astronomer, scholar, poet and philosopher, and the ruler of Samarkand. This site was one of the world-influential observatories in the middle ages. The observatory is a three-story circular building with a unique 40-meter marble sextant and horizontal dial.

  • Shah-i-Zinda

    Built in the 14th and 15th centuries, Shah-i-Zinda consists of 13 tombs and a mosque. The name Shah-i-Zinda means “The living king”. The complex is the final resting place of Samarkand ruler Muhammad and his families. The basic tone of the complex is blue, decorated with colorful ceramics. One of the most important tombs is the one of cousin of the founder of Islam, Muhammad. Tamerlane's wife Tuma-Akha and niece Turka-Akha are also buried here.

  • Islamic Schools at Registan

    Located at the heart of Samarkand, the Regestan (means “sandy place”) is a large group of buildings built between the 15th and 17th centuries. The complex consists of three madrasahs: on the left is the Ulugh Beg Madrasah, built between 1417 and 1420; on the front is the Tilya-Kori Madrasah, built between 1646 and 1660; on the right is the Sher-Dor Madrasah, built between 1619 and 1636.
