Sanya has enjoyed strong growth in tourist arrivals over the first five months of 2018. The growth has been fueled by new air routesand growing awareness of Sanya’s new tourist products.
The city received 8.89 million tourists in the first five months of the year, a year-on-year increase of 10.07 percent. Tourist arrivals included 8.6 million domestic tourists, which represented an increase of 10.19 percent year-on-year, and 290,000 inbound tourists, an increase of 6.63 percent year-on-year.
From January-May of this year, Sanya experienced a strong bump in tourism revenue, which reached 21.06 billion yuan, a 15.18 percent increase year-on-year.
Mr. Tang Sixian, Consulting Director of the Sanya Tourism Development Commission, said, “We are delighted with the steady growth of visitor arrivals. The city’s development focus has turned from traditional sightseeing to leisure activities and vacation packages, and the work we have put into positioning Sanya as a major international coastal resort city is beginning to show returns.”
New Air Routes
Fueling the recent growth is an aggressive strategy to open new international air routes. Sanya now has 23 international and regional air routes, including routes to South Korea, Russia, Kazakhstan, Singapore, Macao, and Taiwan.
Tourism Promotions
Meanwhile, the Sanya Tourism Development Commission has conducted a variety of promotional campaigns in key overseas tourist markets to boost international awareness and interest in the city. The city has also expanded its digital footprint with new websites in Japanese, Korean, and Russian, and social media accounts on six major overseas social networking and travel review platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, and TripAdvisor—all initiatives aimed at further promoting the city in the international tourism market.
