From 1 September, visitors to China Magic on Vienna's Danube Island can look forward to a fantastic world of giant lanterns for 40 days. Up to 20 meter-tall buildings and artworks in silk and bamboo are set up and colorfully illuminated at the Chinese Lantern Festival. Subjects include the Vienna State Opera as well as the Temple of Heavenly Peace in Beijing. Colorful dragons and famous personalities such as Johann Strauss have already impressed hundreds of thousands of people in China.

2,000 years of history

The "China Magic – Festival of Light" also offers an insight into the typical culture of the country with extraordinary dance shows as well as Chinese music and food. A colorful kingdom of magic is created on 70,000 m². There's a special program for children, with areas where they can learn the high art of paper-cutting.

Chinese lantern festivals have a history going back over 2,000 years and traditionally bring the New Year’s festival lasting several days to a close. The impressive show on Danube Island involves 25 kilometers of silk, 20 tonnes of bamboo and steel as well as 18,000 LED lamps. It takes 30 days to set up the more than 30 artworks.
