From December 6th Wi-Fi network was officially launched in the metro of St. Petersburg. The project was implemented by the Moscow Company "MaximaTelecom". This company has already provided a similar network in Moscow subway.
Connection of the red line, which is considered the most loaded one, became a final touch of the project. The total cost of it was 1.3 billion rubles. However, free Wi-Fi project was implemented without of using budget funds. It was applied on the company's own and borrowed resources.
To connect to a free WI-FI network in underground carriage, you need to go through the identification procedure with your smartphone or tablet. You can do it with using a mobile number or with your State Service account.
For monetization, the service uses advertising. Its users must view a few commercials before they can connect to the network. Metro passengers will be able to get rid of this need at the end of January 2018, through making a payment for the performed service.
Connecting the Petersburg underground to the Internet was one of many stages of preparing the city for the upcoming World Cup 2018. It is planned that the ground public transport of St. Petersburg will be equipped with wireless access to the network as well.
In addition, according to a strategic partnership agreement signed in October this year between the city transport committee and MaximaTelecom, there will be formed a unified Wi-Fi space in the territory of St. Petersburg.
