An international tourism promotional event launched by the Sanya Tourism Development Commission was held at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) in Sydney on December 20th, 2017, after the Sanya Serenity Coast (a yacht representing Sanya) arrived in Sydney, winning the fourth leg of the Clipper World Race 2017-18. The event aimed to promote deeper exchange between Sanya and Australia in marine culture, tourism, and other fields.
More than 100 guests attended the event, including Luo Dihui, Vice Director of the China National Tourist Office in Sydney; the Chairman of the Australia-China Relationship Association; Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Founder of the Clipper Race; Wendy Tuck, Australian skipper of Sanya Serenity Coast; and other media guests.
The tourism promotional event was warmly received, and included a photo exhibition of Sanya’s local natural scenery, a display featuring the cultures of Sanya’s local Li and Miao ethnic minority groups, and other themed indoor events. The promotional events aimed to give participating guests in Sydney a deeper understanding and appreciation of Sanya.

At the event, representatives from the Sanya Tourism Development Commission gave an introduction to the city’s abundant tropical coastal tourism resources, highlighting water sports-themed, family-themed, and golf-themed tourism products specially designed for Australian tourists. Keeping in line with international standards, the city has now opened 25 international air routes and attracted more than 40 big-brand hotels. Group travelers from 26 countries including Australia now enjoy visa-free access to Sanya. The city is further diversifying its tourism products, enhancing its ecological protection, optimizing its landscape features, and improving its infrastructure and services. Looking forward, Sanya will provide better services for tourists from Australia and around the world.
Mr. Luo Dihui, Vice Director of the China National Tourist Office in Sydney, said in his speech that Sanya is an energetic, fast-developing holiday resort, and a sailing centre for Hainan Island in China’s south. In recent years, Sanya has hosted a variety of large-scale cultural and sports events, such as the Volvo Ocean Race, Miss World, and the Clipper Round-the-World Yacht Race. The year of 2017 has been named “China-Australia Tourism Year”; the partnership with the Clipper Race aims to promote Sanya in Australia and further enhance tourism cooperation in the Sino-Australia tourism industry, with the goal of establishing Sanya as the “bridge of friendship” connecting Chinese and Australians.
“Sanya is a beautiful resort in the south of China, with excellent marina facilities and a strong sailing heritage. I hope that establishing Sanya as a host port and team partner of the Clipper Race will attract more Australian tourists to Sanya to discover everything the city has to offer,” said Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Founder of Clipper Race.
The tourism promotional event was previously held in Liverpool. This year’s event was held in Sydney, Australia. The Sanya Tourism Development Commission said that next stop for the tourism promotion will be in New York in June, 2018. At each stop, the commission seeks to enhance awareness of Sanya and heighten the city’s reputation in international tourism markets.
