Airfield & Terminal Modernization Project (ATMP) of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), costing 14 billion dollars, has been fully advanced after nearly a decade of planning and site preparation. Major components of the project are under orderly and grand-scale construction, including Automated People Mover (APM) at a cost of 2 billion dollars, Consolidated Rent-A-Car (ConRAC) at a cost of 1 billion dollars, Intermodal Transportation Facility (ITF) at a cost of 220 million dollars and improvement works of a few key roads. Their construction has witnessed great progress.
Thanks to the general transformation and systematical optimization of these facilities, the traffic flow around LAX will be improved greatly. Overall customer experience will be enhanced when passengers enter or leave terminals of LAX.
Main targets of LAX's ATMP:
To enhance the safety and operation management of the north airfield runways and its surroundings;
To offer modern, spacious and efficient terminal facilities to passengers for better customer experience and increase the number of potential passengers in the future;
To decrease the number of remote boarding facilities in the western area of the airfield from 18 to 3 after completing the construction of new terminals and their supporting facilities, in order to prevent passengers from being unnecessarily transferred from a remote stand to another one by shuttles (remote aircraft often change places for landing and take-off);
To build a smoother system for managing nearby roads to reduce the pressure of airport traffic on the local road system.
As ATMP will be gradually finished before the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles, the operation of the aviation industry will once again take a leap forward, and the experience of visitors arriving in Los Angeles will be greatly improved. The project, as one of Los Angeles' largest infrastructure construction projects in recent years, will reinvigorate the local economy, provide more business opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises, and help LAX to maintain its position as the largest gateway for the Asia-Pacific region in North America.
