Introduction: Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Georg Arlt FRGS FRAS is one of the leading experts on China’s outbound tourism.

He visited the People's Republic of China for the first time in 1978, with more than 150 visits since. Prof. Arlt is a Professor for International Tourism Management at West Coast University of Applied Sciences Germany.

In 2004 he founded COTRI China Outbound Tourism Research Institute with offices in Hamburg and Beijing. As COTRIs director he has developed the institute into the leading organisation outside of China for market research and product and strategy development for leading international companies and organisations with regard to the Chinese tourism source market.

He has published widely, is frequently quoted in major Chinese and international media and has acted as Keynote speaker or Chair at more than 50 international conferences on Tourism. He is visiting professor at several universities in China, New Zealand and the UK.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and the Royal Asiatic Society as well as a Fellow of the International Association of China Tourism Experts, a Member of UNWTO Tourism Expert Panel, Vice- President for Western Europe for ITSA International Tourism Sciences Association, Board member of PATA Pacific Asia Travel Association and a member of the WTCF Expert Committee.
