Xiamen Underwater World

Xiamen Underwater World is located on the Gulangyu Island, a 5A-class scenic spot with extremely beautiful scenery. It belongs to the Straco Corporation Limited in Singapore and is one of the well-known spots in Xiamen. Formally opened to the public on the New Year’s Day in 1998, it is a large-scale Marine Aquarium integrated with tourism, entertainment and education of science. And since 1999, it has kept a honorable reputation as the “Base for education of science” in three different levels including the city, province and even the whole country. There are four characteristic exhibitions in the Xiamen Underwater World namely “the exhibition hall of penguins and freshwater fishes”, ”the exhibition hall of the sample of the sperm whale”, “Aquarium and the underwater tunnel” and “the hall for performance”. These exhibitions mainly show over ten thousand famous aquatic animals of more than 350 kinds to the visitors. They are rarely seen in the drainage basins around the world such as the China’s offshore field, the Indian Ocean, the coast of Australia and the Amazon Rivers. The sample of the sperm whale is one of the world’s most complete samples of large whales currently with its length of 18.6 meters and its weight of 48 tons. It is worth seeing in particular. In addition, there are also wonderful performances by the marine animals for visitors at a regular time. You will enjoy more here and you will see a romantic and fascinating marine world.

Except for five exhibition areas regularly showed, some special exhibitions with the specific themes are launched occasionally each year in Xiamen Underwater World. These exhibitions show us the variety, interestingness and interactivity of the species from different fields like biology, sociology and humanities.
