Yunnan University

Founded in 1922, Yunnan University began as a privately run institution called the "University of the Eastern Land" and its name has changed six times since then. It was renamed as Yunnan University in 1938, and is one of the earliest universities in Western China. The university is located in Wuhua District of Kunming, adjacent to the Green Lake Park, with beautiful sceneries and academic atmosphere.

The Huize Institute, Yingqiu Institute and Ginkgo Avenue are worth visiting. Walking on the Ginkgo Avenue, you will see ginkgo trees and their golden leaves everywhere. This is one of the most beautiful sceneries in the campus.

Yunnan University

Zhigong Institute is behind Huize Institute, and with typical Chinese style architecture it is currently the auditorium of Yunnan University. There are a series of relatively low houses on the eastern side, which are for the imperial examination in ancient time, known as ‘Gong Institute’. Built by Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin, Yingqiu Institute was originally the girls’ dormitory. It was a combination of Chinese and Western design, indicating they were exploring the Chinese architecture ideas. To the west of Yingqiu Institute, there is a small stone pier near the clock tower, known as the ‘First Astronomical Site in Yunnan’, which was the first place in China to calculate the latitude and longitude of Kunming.
