The government of Curacao and Airbnb signed an agreement Jan. 17 to help promote tourism to the island; highlight history and culture; address issues related to taxes, host accommodation standards and regulations; and share aggregate data.

The agreement is similar to those signed in November and December between Aruba and Jamaica, respectively, and Airbnb.

"The agreement with Curacao is a great example of how governments and the private sector can work together to achieve mutually desired goals," said Shawn Sullivan, Airbnb's public policy lead for the Caribbean and Central America.

"Curacao is an important and growing market for Airbnb and we are excited to be working with the government to grow sustainable tourism to the island."

Airbnb listings in Curacao total more than 1,000 and a typical host earns $4,400 per year.

"Through our collaborative efforts, we can achieve more effective and efficient tourism development and a greater degree of environmental and social cultural sustainability," said Eugene Rhuggenaath, minister of economic development.
