Sanya enjoyed a record travel boom during this year’s week-long Chinese New Year holiday. The Golden Week wrapped up on February 21st, 2018.

Sanya was one of the four sub-venues to stage the 2018 CNY Gala on CCTV for the Year of the Dog on February 15th. An eight-minute performance at the Sanya sub-venue entertained millions of audience worldwide. The performance presented Hainan’s tropical features and highlights of Hainan’s 30 years of development.

According to statistics released by the Sanya Tourism Development Commission, Sanya received a total of 966,900 visitors during the 2018 CNY holiday, up 1.01 percent year-on-year. Tourism revenue reached RMB 9.702 billion, a year-on-year increase of 7.03 percent.

Hotel Room Occupancy Rate

The hotel room occupancy rate across the city averaged 79.33 percent, a year-on-year increase of 1.39 percent (accounting for the fact that the number of hotel rooms across the city has increased 1.72 percent year-on-year). The average hotel room rate in the Yalong Bay area stood at RMB 3,754; that figure was RMB 3,041 in the Haitang Bay area, RMB 1,696 in the Sanya Bay area, RMB 1,627 in the Dadonghai area, and RMB 875 in the downtown area.

The average hotel occupancy rate was 80.76 percent in the Yalong Bay area, 83.69 percent in the Haitang Bay area, 78.98 percent in the Sanya Bay area, 77.99 percent in the Dadonghai area, and 78.54 percent in the downtown area.

Tourist Arrivals at 8 Major Scenic Spots

Eight major scenic spots in Sanya together received a total of 1.13 million tourists, a year-on-year increase of 6.77 percent. Among the eight major scenic spots, Nanshan Tourism Culture Zone received 306,300 tourists; Dongtian Park received 43,300 tourists; West Island received 49,600 tourists; Tianya Haijiao Scenic Spot received 227,800 tourists; Wuzhizhou Island received 90,400 tourists; Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park received 85,700 tourists; Sanya Romance Park received 276,600 tourists; and Luhuitou Park Scenic Spot received 51,600 tourists.

Tourist Spending

Middle and high-income tourists were the main holiday travelers in Sanya during the holiday. Tourists with a monthly salary of 8,000 yuan or above accounted for 65.83 percent of the total figure. Per-capita consumption of overnight visitors was RMB 2,476.79 per day during the holiday, and per-capita consumption of one-day tour visitors reached RMB 881.71. The average length of tourists’ stays in Sanya was 4.69 days.

Rural Tourism

The city’s rural tourism spots received a total of 36,000 visitors, including 20,100 visitors in Haitang District, 6,400 visitors in Jiyang District and 9,500 in Tianya District.

Air & Rail Passenger Throughput

During the Golden Week period, the Sanya Phoenix International Airport operated a total of 2,699 flights, the same level as last year. Passenger throughput at the airport reached 501,500, up 7.4 percent year-on-year.

Among flights operated, 1,351 flights landed at Sanya Airport, up 0.2 percent year-on-year, bringing 249,200 passengers, up 0.1 percent year-on-year. Forty-five international flights arrived at the airport, a drop of 8.2 percent year-on-year. Those flights brought 6,500 passengers to the city, a decrease of 5 percent year-on-year.

Meanwhile, a total of 1,348 flights departed from Sanya Airport, a drop of 0.1 percent year-on-year. Those flights transported 252,300 passengers, up 15.7 percent year-on-year. Forty-six international flights departed from the airport, a drop of 4.2 percent year-on-year; the flights carried 7,400 passengers, up 2.3 percent year-on-year.

The Sanya Railway Station was a point of transit for 420,600 passengers, a year-on-year increase of 24.13 percent. Among those passengers, a total of 206,200 passengers departed from the station, a year-on-year increase of 20.06 percent; and 214,400 passengers arrived at the station, a year-on-year jump of 28.31 percent.

During the week-long holiday, traffic volume on roads in Sanya reached 3.41 million vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 26.5 percent.

Individual Tourist Arrivals

The number of individual tourists visiting Sanya surpassed the number of group tourists, at 89 percent of the total figure, including road tripping tourists and family groups. The top ten source provinces or cities for domestic visitors to Sanya were Henan, Guangdong, Heilongjiang, Sichuan, Beijing, Zhejiang, Hebei, Shandong, Shanxi (山西), and Shanxi (陕西).
