Every two years Hamburg celebrates its second largest maritime event after the harbour birthday: the Hamburg Cruise Days. For the 7th time, the Hamburg Cruise Days in September 2019 will transform the port into the absolute cruise hot spot of Europe. The popular event, which is known beyond the borders of Germany, always takes place in the odd years. The Cruise Days are always a complete success for the Hanseatic city.
Numerous visitors come to marvel at cruise ships, let themselves be inspired and enjoy the colourful supporting programme consisting of stage acts, gastronomy and shopping opportunities. With all the water that flows in and around Hamburg, one thing is clear: the colour blue belongs to Hamburg just like the harbour or the Michel. But there is a week in the year when Hamburg appears particularly blue - we are talking about Blue Port. Every two years - as part of the Hamburg Cruise Days - nightly Hamburg is bathed in blue, almost magical light for four kilometres along the harbour and at the most beautiful landmarks. The next lighting project will take place in 2019. The renowned lighting artist Michael Batz, who already installed blue light gates throughout Hamburg on the occasion of the 2006 Football World Cup, is responsible for the project.
Since 2008, his art project "Blue Port Hamburg" has been depicting the port of Hamburg in ever new ways, telling stories and fascinating people. The light sources are mainly path lights, public lighting or building lights, which the artist atmospherically lets play with each other. With over 9,000 light elements, the harbour shines in blue for ten days after dusk, increasingly casting a spell over buildings and bridges. The result is an unforgettable total work of art that inevitably invites you to take a nocturnal stroll along the Elbe.
