Nanjing Lukou International Airport is located in the Southeastern part of Nanjing, 35.8 km away from the city center in a straight line.
The airport has favorable clearance conditions and is equipped with advanced and complete facilities. There is a dedicated highway between the airport and the downtown area, as well as a connection with Nangjing-Shanghai Highway, Nanjing-Hangzhou Highway, Nanjing-Nantong Highway, Nanjing-Lianyungang Highway and Nanjing-Maanshan Highway. The transportation is very convenient.
The construction of Nanjing Lukou International Airport began on February 28, 1995. It began operations on July 1, 1997. On November 18, 1997, with the permission of the State Council, the airport opened up to accommodate foreign aircraft.
Nanjing Lukou International Airport is one of the most important airports in China, and it is also East China’s cargo hub. Shanghai Hongqiao Airport, Shanghai Pudong Airport and Nanjing Lukou International Airport cooperatie as diversion airfields as appropriate.
According to the general plan, the airport will annually handle 360,000 flights, 40 million passengers, and reach a cargo throughput of 1 million tons. The airport’s principle is plan once, implement in different phases.
At present, the airport is capable of handling 69,600 flights per year, 5,555 passengers per hour during the peak hours, annually severing 12 million passengers, and achieving an annual cargo throughput of 400,000 tons.
Nanjing Lukou International Airport has a 3600 meters long, 5 meters wide runway, one 3600 meters long, 45 meters wide taxiway, and lots of lighting facilities to aid flights. The airfield has been designed according to 4E rating requirements; the airport terminal building covers an area of 132,000 square meters, with a division for arrivals and departures; the airport contains a warehouse covering 41,000 square meters, an 1,800 square meters shed, and a site of 20,000 square meters to handle cargo, including special cargo. It has a 447,000 square meters apron, including a 47,000 square meters apron for cargo aircraft.
In 2007, Nanjing Lukou International Airport handled 81,700 flights; it served a total number of 8.037 million passengers, ranking the 14th in China, and achieved a cargo throughput of 180,400 tons, ranking the 10th in China.
