Built in 1928, Jiangsu People’s Theater, originally known as the Capital Film Theater, was the first silent film theater in Nanjing. It was renamed Zhongxi Film Theater during the Anti-Japanese War and later the National Film Theater after the victory. Soon after the People’s Republic of China was founded, it was renamed People’s Film Theater but it was not until 1953 when Jiangsu was established as a province that it was officially named Jiangsu People’s Theater.

With the supports fromthe CPC’s Jiangsu Provincial Committee and Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government, the theater was rebuilt and renovated for several times. In April, 1997, the Party and the government invested over 20 million yuan ($3.3 million) to buy the property rights of the theater and launched a comprehensive maintenance and renovation project.

The once poorly-equipped theater of 2,000 square meters has now been upgraded into a well-equipped comprehensive multifunctional provincial-level theater, covering an area of more than 9,000 square meters.

Route: Take Bus No16, 100, 34, 35 or 1 to Xinjiekou South Station.
