Jamaica

What a life at Jamaica! A characteristic and exciting locale that cannot be overlooked for any 'flâneur' (wanderer) in Milan. There is the Bar bistrot and a restaurant that are snuggled into this narrow street that widens up further down where the entrance to the Brera Academy can be found.

Jamaica owes its fame to the people that have frequented it and here, poets such as Quasimodo, writers such as Bianciardi (author of a La Vita Agra (The Bitter Life) which describes Milan in the 1960s), and many painters including Dova, Cascella, Fontana (with his artistic intuition), the provocative Piero Manzoni, the versatile Tadini and photographers like Mulas and Castaldi were patrons of this establishment.

Today it has been modernized, but that old dairy-store atmosphere has been maintained, where the Milanese go for lunch or dinner as Bianciardi described in the pages of his book.
