General Information

The applause for the jockeys resounds at the San Siro racecourse. This is a place of antique origins that satisfies a passion for horse racing, from the enthralling harness-racing to the adrenalin-pumped thoroughbred competitions. The area is surrounded by greenery and is wholly dedicated to the sport, from the stables to the training track and the services for personnel.

The racecourse is subdivided into two parts: the harness-racing area that extends over an area of 152 thousand metres squared, 30 thousand of which are reserved for the two grandstands and able to hold six thousand spectators. The thoroughbred racing area is comprised of the oval-shaped Trenno track on two thousand square metres and there is a further 45 thousand square metres dedicated to the public that has the capacity to hold 20 thousand people.

The racecourse was designed by the architect Vietti Violli and renovated in 1975. It is located in the outskirts of the city in a sporting area. In the square in front of the secondary thoroughbred-racing grandstand, the large, imposing bronze horse monument stands at a height of seven metres. It was created in the USA following plans that Leonardo made when he designed the original monument for Francesco Sforza.

Anecdotes and Curiosities

The harness-racing racecourse boasts two grandstands both equipped with air-conditioning indoors, as well as a restaurant, snack bar, five cafés, two cigarette kiosks and a children’s play area.

There are two car parking facilities available to spectators, one of which is located inside the complex and can hold up to 500 cars; a larger, 1000-vehicle capacity car park is located outside the complex.

The racecourse’s harness-racing track has been modernised recently and the iron posts, to which galvanized sheet iron was attached, were replaced with classic pickets planted in the ground.

The Liberty-style grandstands of the thoroughbred racing course were realized according to architect Vietti Violi’s design.

The structure is equipped for night racing and has ten video cameras that capture the races. It also allows the public to follow the competitions on 76 monitors.

Betting is managed electronically, both for receipt and payment. The structure enjoys an information update service in real time, provided through a television system.

The glories of Italian racing, both in the past and more recently, from Nearco to Varenne and Ribot, have passed through this racecourse.

Don't miss

The summer night-time races are particularly spectacular.
