This museum is the largest historical museum in Belarus, which owns a unique collection of items of material and spiritual culture of Belarusians, the country's largest collection of archaeological finds. The museum building is a historical and cultural monument, built in 1903 - 1905 years. In 1919 by decision of the People's Commissariat of Education, the first state museum in Minsk, called Regional Museum, was opened. It was located in the former Noble Assembly. In 1923, it was transformed into the Belarusian State Museum.

Works of art, decorative art and objects of material culture were exhibited in the halls of the museum. The museum consists of two branches. The first is located in a building on the Frunze str., 19, and designed to store and archive the collections of the museum, and is an architectural monument of XIX century too. The second is the home of the First Congress of the RSDRP.
