Church Of San Gottardo In Corte– Via Pecorari 2 - Milano
Just behind Palazzo Reale, you can see San Gottardo in Corte, with its beautiful and slightly tilted bell-tower: The church was dedicated to the Saint Gottardo by the nobleman and patron Azzone Visconti in 1336.
The Gothic entrance portal, added to the side of the church in 1929, adorned the original facade before it was incorporated into the wall of the staircase of Palazzo Reale renovated by Piermarini in the 1700s.
The Basilica, that was firstly Ducal and then Royal, has undergone various stages of restoration work in recent months which led to the replacement of the ruined floors, restoration of the walls, vaults, surfaces, marble features and the Crucifixion fresco, attributed to a pupil of Giotto and important evidence of the artist’s presence in the city. The basilica from June 17th to 31 th October 2015 will host nine magnificent sculptures by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, from the famous Baptistery of Pisa.
