This year, the Athens Festival is highly pluralistic, offering shows, concerts, and events for all tastes. Three of the must-see performances in June that introduce us in the international and domestic vanguard are “Hamlet” by Oskaras Korsunovas (25-26/6), “Julius Caesar. Fragments” (17-20/6) by Romeo Castellucci, and Revolt Athens (15-16/6) by ODC Ensemble. The award-winning Lithuanian director Oskaras Korsunovas approaches the famous Shakespearian work of Hamlet in a different way, talking about the most recent history and raising contemporary issues. It is a play in process, with the actors putting on their make-up on stage, while the text flow changes incessantly, giving us an unexpected but dynamic show. Romeo Castellucci first dealt with Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar in 1997. Almost twenty years after, he returns to present a performance/study on reason and speech, where the audience watches the forty-minute show standing on its feet. Revolt Athens, by the Greek Elli Papakonstantinou and her talented team, is a performance about modern Athens during the crisis, with its problems that ultimately go beyond the narrow confines of the Greek capital and reach across Europe.
