When the huge Ferris Wheel in Sankt Pauli shines in the evening, the air is filled with aroma of marshmallow and roast almond, staff of large creation facilities yell “the last round” at the broadcast, we know that the Hamburg DOM has started. The Hamburg DOM is held three times a year. During the DOM festival, Heiligengeistfeld becomes a recreational paradise for people of all ages.

Spring DOM in March, Summer DOM (also called Hummelfest) in July and August, as well as Winter DOM share one thing in common: a scene of bustle and excitement you will ever see in Heiligengeistfeld from afternoon to late at night for four weeks each time. The air is filled with aroma of roast almond and oven-fresh desserts and you can enjoy food of all sorts from corn on the cob, hash browns, fried and roast sausages to preserved fruit and waffles along the facilities like roller coasters and merry-go-rounds. For many years, a newly established experience area with ever-changing themes also serves as an integral part of the DOM.

History of Hamburg DOM

Back in the 11thcentury, businessmen, craftsmen and street performers would hide in the St. Mary's Cathedral of Hamburg in live through the winter. And so the owner with red beard – Burchard, Archbishop of Bremen – banned these people in various trades from entering the Cathedral.

In 1337, Christians fought for the rights for these “people in various trades” to stay in the Cathedral. However, their lives away from wandering ended in 1804 – the year that St. Mary's Cathedral was demolished. At the end of the 19thcentury, they found their “new home” in Heiligengeistfeld and thus held rather fixed fairs and market. And that is the origin of Hamburg DOM. Therefore, Hamburg DOM refers to this public festival in Hamburg instead of St. Mary's Cathedral.

In the 1930s, Hamburg DOM, which was only held in winter, extended its operating time to spring, to help those street performers and craftsmen live through the economic crisis. After the Second World War, Hamburg DOM was also carried out in summer. Eventually, Hamburg DOM, held three times per year, becomes the largest public festival in Northern Germany.
