It’s been a long time since Buddhism was introduced to Bangkok, where temples are densely dotted at every corner of the city, with almost all of them looking exquisite and splendid. It is said that Bangkok is the place which has the most temples in the world. In total, there are more than 400 temples of different sizes in the city, among which Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Pho, and Wat Traimit Temple are the most famous ones.

Wat Phra Kaew

Wat Phra Kaew, located at the northeast corner of Bangkok’s Grand Palace, is the most famous Buddhist temple in Thailand. Wat Phra Kaew is the place where the royal family serves the jade Buddha’s statue and holds religious activities, and it was given the name because of the jade Buddha statue in it. When each new season arrives, the king of Thailand will change the clothes of the jade Buddha’s statue himself in order to keep the country safe and prosperous. Each time when the cabinet of Thailand changes, the new cabinet members will swear in to their king in front of the jade Buddha’s statue. The interior of the temple is luxurious, with the Buddha’s progress to enlightenment drawn on the surrounding walls.

Wat Pho

Wat Pho, located south of the Grand Palace, is the oldest and also the largest temple in Bangkok, and there are the most stupas and Buddha statues among all the temples in Bangkok. The reclining Buddha inside it is one of the biggest reclining Buddha statues in the world, with 46 meters long and 15 meters tall. The feet of the Buddha are extremely large, with each one measuring 5.8 meters long and Buddhist patterns carved on these feet.

Wat Traimit Temple

Located inside the Wat and Traimit Temple is the largest gold Buddha statue in the world. It shots golden light to all directions, being three meters tall and weighing 5.5 tons. The origin of the gold Buddha statue remains a mystery. Currently, this statue is worth 4 billion dollars even in the gold itself.
