It’s been a very unusual year of announcements for Halloween Horror Nights in both Hollywood and Orlando. Hollywood has rolled out all of your favorite horror icons with Freddy vs. Jason, Leatherface and Chop Top from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series, Michael Myers, and the Exorcist.
Meanwhile Orlando has been all over the map with Krampus, The Walking Dead, Michael Myers and their own three unique original houses. When American Horror Story was announced earlier today for both parks, it just made sense in a year that has had no rhyme or reason to the mazes announced.
American Horror Story will bring three of the most popular seasons to life, mixing Murder House from season one, Freak Show from season four and Hotel from season five. Why those three? On top of being the most popular seasons in the series, they are the seasons that are the most visually appealing, with the most unique characters.
The gimp and the other ghosts in the basement from season one will bring the character of the Murder House to life. In season four, the Freak Show has a bevy of mutilated twisted and (sometimes) blood-thirsty freaks. You’ll see the aftermath of the carnage that befalls the performers of the show, and you’ll even come face to face with the horrifying Twisty the Clown. In season five, you will traverse the halls of the Hotel Cortez and become one of the Countess’ playthings.
“‘American Horror Story’ is one of the most disturbing television shows ever produced, and with such perverse storylines unfolding with each installment, ‘Halloween Horror Nights’ is undoubtedly the only place that could create a living version of the nightmares that Ryan Murphy dreams up,” said John Murdy, creative director at Universal Studios Hollywood and Executive Producer of “Halloween Horror Nights.” “Plus, as a fan favorite, ‘American Horror Story’ has been the number one requested maze from our guests and we’re excited to let them know that we listened to them and are bringing ‘American Horror Story’ to life.”
“‘American Horror Story’ is engaging for so many reasons, one of them being the fantastic way each installment of the series reveals completely new characters and stories for its viewers,” said Michael Aiello, director of entertainment creative development for Universal Orlando Resort. “It's that constant evolution that makes this popular series a perfect fit for Halloween Horror Nights – and we can’t wait for our guests to experience some of the horror they’ve seen on the show."
How does this all fit in with the rest of Halloween Horror Nights? Quite frankly, it doesn’t! That’s actually the beauty and simplicity of it all. It’s all just good horror. In Hollywood there is never really a theme, as the mazes and scare zones all exist in a mashup of terror and carnage. From the mazes, to the shows, to even the Terror Tram (yet to be announced), there is chaos everywhere. Chaos is a good thing for horror.
In Orlando, everything ties loosely to the events’ main icon, Chance. For the first time, HHN Orlando is picking up right where they left off. Jack the Clown reigned carnage over the event last year, and left Chance to take the blame. She’s facing incarceration, but she escapes within the confines of her demented mind. The event will ride the line of you facing the reality of her incarceration, and being brought into her dementia. The mazes, scare zones and shows will reflect the duality of Chance, and give you an alternate perspective at the way you look at things.
Where does American Horror Story fit? Again, it doesn’t, a although you could say that each season gives you a terrifying alternative to the world you know, from being in a new home, to taking in a circus, and even visiting a hotel. The show offers you the flipside of that coin in all of those situations.
This is the final announcement for Orlando which now includes ten different mazes, two unique shows, and five original scare zones. In Hollywood there is still one major announcement, which will include Terror Tram and the shows (if there are any). The event kicks off on Sept. 16, in exactly one month, and it will run until Oct. 31 at both parks. This is by far the biggest and most eclectic line up of both coasts, and the terror has only just begun!
