The Feast of Hong Kung (9/8) features a traditional Cantonese Opera during the Senior Citizens’ Big Bowl Feasting (7:30 pm to 8:30 pm, Hong Kung Temple Square, Rua de Cinco de Outubro), at which two tables are reserved for tourists (MOP130 each, telephone reservation required) who want to experience real local culture. In addition, senior citizens are presented with gifts and serenaded with classical songs.

Sometimes referred to as the Lovers’ Festival, the Feast of Maidens (9/8) has deep meaning for unmarried women as it celebrates the only day in the year when the legendary Heavenly Weaver can meet her lover, the Cowherd, over a bridge of birds spanning the Milky Way. It’s celebrated this year with a series of activities (7-26/8) which include an Evening Party (7/8, San Kio Garden, 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm) featuring Classical Costumes, kids Catwalk Competition, games, performances and more activities. And don’t miss the Moon Worship ceremony (8/8, 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm) and orchid exhibition.

The Feast of Hungry Ghosts (16/8) - designed to placate the ancestors’ souls and those of all the forgotten spirits - features the burning of small paper objects on pavements or at the entrance to homes, with dishes of meat and fruits offered to the deceased.

The Feast of Wealth God (24/8) involves thanksgiving rituals for the deity plus a dragon dance and martial art performance.
