Architecture in Dresden

Not a German city has changed its face in recent years as much as Dresden. The Saxon state capital continues to develop consistently, and is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe 20 years after Mau-erfall. The historical buildings of the city are increasingly entering into a dialogue with buildings of contemporary architecture. In the past few years, unique projects such as the new building of the Saxon Landtag and the International Congress Center as well as the dome-shaped glass roof of the Kleiner Schlosshof in the Residenzschloss have been realized.

An Arrow Through Dresden's History

In 2011, the prestigious "New York Times" published a list of 41 places to visit this year. Dresden was the only German city to be mentioned with the newly opened Militaryist Museum of the German Armed Forces. The design for the new building comes from the American star architect Daniel Libeskind. The Dresden Museum is thus a series of world-famous buildings designed by Libeskind.

The Albertinum---An Ark for art

After the Dresden art treasures were threatened in the summer of 2002 by the "Elbe flood" of the Elbe and could be saved only with great effort from the underground depots of the Staatliche Kunst-sammlungen Dresden, it was decided to expand the Albertinum by a highly water-secure depot. The Berlin office Staab Architekten adapted the Albertinum to the technical requirements of a modern museum operation. Above the 1,800-square-meter inner courtyard of the building, a bridge-like, two-storey building has been suspended at a height of twelve meters since 2010, in which the depots and workshops of the Dresden State Art Collections are located. Under the construction, another central space, the Lichthof. He is used as a museum guide and space for events.

Tips

The Albertinum houses two significant art museums with the Neue Meister Gallery and the sculpture collection. In addition, the Lichthof can be rented by MSU Museumsladen GmbH as a venue for private events or corporate celebrations.

The Quarters at Neumarkt

Visitors who think they have visited Dresden once and have seen everything are deceiving themselves. One of the most recent completed construction projects shows that the state capital is always in motion: the quarter VIII between the Dresden Castle and the Johanneum, in the middle of the Old Town. The area is one of the eight quarters that have been rebuilt in the last few years around the Neumarkt. In its structure, the area approaches the existing urban outline and traces the historical course of the road. The famous city composition of the Neumarkt was formed in the time of August the Strong and in its overall appearance with the Frauenkirche in the center was considered a highlight of Baroque architecture. During the attack on the city on February 13, 1945, the area was almost completely destroyed. Only decades later the discussion about the reorganization of the Neumarkt began with the reconstruction of the Frauenkirche.Some 20 "Leitbauten" in the main floor plan and facade have been reconstructed in detail from around 60 historically valuable buildings. 40 other buildings have been created with historical facades and new ground plans.
