Lao Zhengxing Restaurant was opened in 1862 by Zhu Zhengping and Cai Renxing. Originally, it was named “Zhengxing Restaurant”, but later the name is adopted by many other restaurants. So its name was changed into “Lao Zhengxing” and two characters – “Tong Zhi” were added to it.

For more than one hundred years, the ingredients that Lao Zhengxing Restaurant chooses are aquatic food, the local special product in Tai Lake Area. The dishes there are characterized by the flavors in Jiangnan, taking the Shanghai dishes as specialty. In spring you can taste fishes. In summer, shrimps are frequently seen there. In autumn, it’s a season to eat hairy crabs. In winter, herring dishes make appearance. It can be seen that these dishes usually use fresh aquatic and seafood as the major ingredients.
