Shanghai Grand Theater is situated in People’s Square, costing 1.2 billion yuan in total to construct. According to the design of French Xia Bangjie Architectural Design Company, it covers an area of 2.1 hectares with a total floor area of 64 thousand square meters, and a total height of 40 meters. The whole building quite resembles a crystal palace clustered by musical notes. The most advanced fully-automatic mechanical stage is used and series of supporting facilities like ticket center, rehearsal room, VIP room, exhibition hall, art stores, coffee bars, banquet hall and parking lots are provided.

Shanghai Grand Theater has upheld international, artistic, creative and original brand positioning for many years by regarding the first-rate art works, experiences and education as its own purpose. It has always taken the “famous masters, groups and art works” as its feature and devoted to realize the development as a model of China’s operas, the poster of city cultures and the center of cultural creativity.

Since the formal opening in August 27, 1998, it has attracted numerous world-level performing groups and large number of artists which brought about 8000 showings with 10 million visitors attending. It has become a comprehensive platform of exhibition, exchanges and promotion for world-level art works, international artistic activities and public artistic education.

The first renovation, after 15 years’ of service, was carried out from March to November of 2013, and from December 2013 to March 2014. Apart from hard facilities, the upgraded Shanghai Opera has also made great efforts to ensure that the performing standard and audience’s cultural need are met. The original western restaurant was reconstructed into a multifunctional hall mainly used for art popularization and news release. The original department store on the first floor was rebuilt into a public cultural activity area including art shops, coffee bars and exhibition halls. In addition, stairs of both sides of the theater lobby on the second floor were connected together, providing an integrated space for leisure and experience. Besides, it becomes more human-oriented in many aspects such as energy-saving and more advanced, scientific, comfortable and environmentally friendly.
