Hamburg German Theatre is one of the earliest and largest troupes, founded in 1767. There are 1831 seats. It had a connection with Lessing, Schiller, Gerd and other enduring names as well as their works together in the earlier time. Especially in 1957, Mr. Grundgens as the director of the theatre self-directed and starred this literary drama of Gerd’s“Faust” and pushed the theatre to an art peak. After China and Germany established diplomatic relations in 1972, Hamburg German Theatre finally brought Bly Hitt’s classical drama to Beijing under the multi effort in 1979; this was the first exchange of drama between China and Germany. And in November 2005, invited by the Shanghai International Arts Festival, Hamburg German Theatre also brought a classical work-Brecht《The Caucasian Chalk Circle》. Since its premiere in October 2003 this play is often filled with good reviews. German drama is bound to become a major highlight in the Shanghai International Arts Festival. Since 2000, Director of the theatre was served by Mr. Tom Stromberg.
From the forerunner of the Enlightenment in Germany to an outstanding spokesman for the development of German theatre today, Hamburg German Theatre plays a decisive role in the development history of contemporary drama in Germany as well as Europe.
