Lishui River has two largest tributaries. One is Maoyan River tributary, and another is Lou River tributary, which is known as one of the three biggest ancient roads in China! It’s also the most well-known river in contemporary history of western Hunan. There is a local saying: “knowing Lou River is knowing western Hunan”.

Lou River Drifting, located in Jiangping Town, is only 30 kilometers (40 minutes drive) away from Wulingyuan core scenic area. The company currently has more than 120 drifting boats, and is capable of receiving up to 1000 tourists at one time. With the completion of the upstream water-regulation dam, tourists will enjoy a more thrilling and exciting drifting experience.

In Tujia history, Xiang Dakun is the beloved Tujia leader, who is the prince of Emperor Xiang in late Yuan and early Ming Dynasty. The well-known Tianzi Mountain scenic area was named after the uprising led by Prince Xiang. Today there is another tourist attraction at Lou River named after Prince Xiang: the washing shoal of prince’s concubines. The first shoal in the drifting tour is said to be the place where Prince Xiang’s concubines washed clothes for brave soldiers. Now there are a lot of Tujia women and girls washing clothes here.
