La Sagrada Familia Basilica is located in the Eixample district of Barcelona. It is the only building that was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 long before it was finished. Construction for the Sagrada Familia project began in 1882. From 1883 the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi took over the leadership of the works until his death in 1926. La Sagrada Familia became Gaudi’s life work. Based on its original design, Gaudi used a lot of curves and natural color to design this church which is a perfect architectural integrity of nature and Catholicism. Gaudi devoted most of his life time to La Sagrada Familia Basilica which has become a Barcelona landmark.
La Sagrada Familia Basilica has three grand façades: the Nativity façade to the East, the Passion façade to the West, and the Glory façade to the South. Every façade is crowned by four bell towers which represent the Twelve Apostles. In the center of La Sagrada Familia Basilica are six immense towers, of which four symbolize the four Gospel evangelists, the other two, Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ.
The central nave soars to a height of 45 meters with stained-glass vaulting and colorful sunlight.
The 170-meter-high tower, brightly-colored mosaics, spiral stairs and vivid sculptures in the wall grace La Sagrada Familia Basilica.
The basement of La Sagrada Familia is mainly used to hold exhibition and play audio-visual materials. Gaudi House Museum exhibits manuscripts, sketches and models from Gaudi. Also the basement of this building is the burial place for Gaudi.
