Thousand-Island Lake lies in Chunan County in western suburb of Hangzhou, Zhejiang, 129 km east of Hangzhou and 130 km west of Huangshan Mountain, being a shining pearl on the famous tourist route of Hangzhou----Thousand-island Lake ---- Huangshan Mountain which includes the landscapes of the city, lake and mountain. Together with the national scenic spots such as Hangzhou West Lake, Huangshan Mountain and Xidi Village and Hongcun Village in Anhui, Wuyuan, Sanqingshan Mountain in Jiangxi and Wuyi Mountain in Fujian, they compose an organic tourism network. As Thousand-island Lake is situated in the center of regional tourism cooperation union of Zhejiang, Jiangxi and Anhui, many cities in the regions like Shanghai, Jiangsu, Anhui, Jiangxi and Fujian have high speed direct transportation to the Thousand-island Lake.

The lake area of Thousand-island Lake is 573 km2. The name came from the 1,078 verdant islands. And the water of 17.8 billion cubic meters is 4 times of that of Taihu Lake, the equivalent of 3,000 West Lakes. The water visibility stays at 9 to 12 meters throughout the year, and belongs to the first level national water and is praised as “most clear lake in the world”. The major characteristic of the Thousand-island Lake is “thousand islands, clear water and golden belt” (as there is a strip of golden soil in the joint of the islands and lake, it’s called golden belt). The islands there are like various jades that the small ones are like pigments, while the big ones are like green caves. The lake water is like a girl taking off her veil, with bright eyes and white teeth, gentle and elegant, showing the real face of the clear lake. And the belt is like a jade edged with golden circle, shimmering with dazzling color in the sunshine.

Chunan County, where the Thousand-island Lake lies in, has a history of 1,800 years with splendid culture, being famous for its “magnificent mountains and rivers, and state of literature”. Many celebrities such as Li Bai, Wang Wei, Lu You, Fan Zhongyan, Zhu, Xi, Guo Moruo and Ba Jin have forged bonds with the mountains and rivers of Chunan County.
