Almaty used to be the capital, the capital then moved to Astana. You can take a car directly to the Merdeka Square, located in the city center. There is an independent monument in the center of the square. The monument was proposed and supported by Kazakh President Nazarbayev and built in 1999. It is located in the central Merdeka Square of the center in Almaty City, the intersection of Sutter Baye J Avenue and PaiSeytoff Street. The monument is 28 meters high, at the top of the ruler is the golden knight is standing on the snow leopard with wings that measure 6 meters high, a symbol of strong state power in the Kazakh land. At the foot of the monument there are four sculptures, representing “the wise man in the heaven, Earth Mother, two children riding (symbol of the young republic as well as the bright future).”The family which they formed together is the basis of national existence and human reproduction. The 10 pieces of relics around the monument describe the stages of the developmental history of Kazakhstan from ancient times to Independent Day. The sculptures on the top of the monument are unearthed cultural relics with incumbent president handprints beneath the monument.
