Independence Square is located in the east side of Colombo University. This iconic cultural plaza is the place that the independence ceremony of Sri Lanka was held on 4th of February in 1948. The Independence Hall of the central square’s design was inspired by the time the Emperor met Hajj during the Kandy Dynasty. There is a fountain at night and the people of Sri Lanka go for a walk in the evening.
The green lawn around the square stands against the Independence Memorial Hall. It is surrounded by the stone lions. The back of the Memorial Hall is the statue of Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister D. S. Senanayake. The flag here flies high on the west side while facing the distant White House. Many young people rest here; it is also a good place for studying and enjoying some quiet time.
