Mount Heng, named as Beiyue, is 2017 meters in elevation and shares the name of Five Mountains with Mount Tai, Mount Hua, Mount Heng and Mount Song. The mountain is also well-known at home and abroad. The Mount Heng was approved by the State Council and listed in the list of the First National Level Landscape Resort in the name of the Shanxi Mount Heng Landscape Resort in 1982. It was named as Mount Chang, Hengzong, Yuanyue and Ziyue. It is located 10 km in the south of Hunyuan County, of 62 km from Datong City. Mount Heng, also known as "Mount Taiheng, Yuanyue, Ziyue, and Mount Damao" was once renamed as "Mount Chang" to avoid the personal name of Liu Heng, the Emperor Wen of Han, during the Han Dynasty.
According to the Book of History, the Emperor Shun held a memorial ceremony remotely for Beiyue in the north tour, then granted the title of suzerain of ten thousands of mounts to Beiyue; then there was the record of "the north of the river is the territory of Mount Heng" in King Yu Tamed the Flood; Beiyue was granted the title of King and Emperor by the First Emperor of Qin, Emperor Wu of Han, Emperor Taizong of Tang, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and Emperor Zhenzong of Song successively. Chu Yuan-chang glorified Beiyue as God, and it is thus clear that it is of a long history.
