Odori Park is an oasis with 92 kinds of trees (4,700 trees in total) including lilacs and elms located and other kinds standing in the middle of a building block. Both the locals and tourists can relax fully enjoy themselves on its lawns and around its fountains.
Though called a park, Odori Park is in fact a street. In 1871, it was built as a firebreak which cuts central Sapporo into the northern and southern parts. The firebreak became Shiribeshi Dori, which was renamed Odori. Odori Park, which is usually a very calm and relaxed space, is also used for many of Hokkaido’s best-known seasonal events of different interests, such as the Snow Festival in the winter, Lilac Festival in spring, YOSAKOI Soran Festival and beer garden in summer, and Autumn Festival, which brings together various Hokkaido cuisines in autumn.
