The White House

The White House is the private residence and administrative headquarters of every President of the United States, which often indicates the American government; it is a white sandstone building in neoclassical style. Although the residence was picked by President George Washington, he never lived in it. The first resident was President John Adams, and after that, it has always been the official signature of the American government.

It survived a fire at the hands of the British in 1814 (during the war of 1812) and another fire in the West Wing in 1929, while Herbert Hoover was President. During the renovations in 1817, to cover the burning marks, president Monroe ordered to apply a white oil paint over the building, and it has been called "The White House" ever since. In 1902, the place was officially named as "The White House" by President Theodore Roosevelt.
