The former name was Birgu and is the most famous of the three sisters. It was the main battlefield during the great siege of Malta. Also, it was the earliest habitat for the Knights of Saint John in Malta City. Near the edge of the water stands St. Angelo, which is the opposite to Valletta. This is probably the oldest bunker on the Island of Malta. Because of its advantageous geographical location (located on the coast and inland), it is is called “the cradle of Malta history.” Regardless of the fact that the Knights of St John’s fled here in order to escape the Ancient Phoenicians or that the neoteric and modern British people used it as a fortification. The name “Victorious Town” is deserved. There are many churches and buildings are even older than Valletta. Nowadays, there are narrow winding paths in Vittoriosa Town and there are exaggerated cactus flowers in full bloom at the side of the road.
