In the history of Buddhism, Abhayagiri Dagoba represented not only a temple, but also a religious sect with unique historical records, tradition and the philosophy of life. Just like most relics in this old city, the great Abhayagiri was in ruins and became a paradise for weeds and wild trees. In the 3rd century AD, the supportive policy pushed by the king once raised Abhayagiri to unprecedented heights. Faxian practiced Buddhism in Abhayagiri for 2 years and brought several important Buddhist scriptures, which provided an important theoretical basis for the development of Buddhism in China. In today’s Abhayagiri, there is a museum dedicated to Faxian. Abhayagiri’s achievements also reflect on its exquisite architectural and carving art, the most prominent of which are the moonstones and guardian stones that used to decorate the temple steps.
