It was designed and built by the French famous archeologist, Mariette in the Boulaq, at the north of Cairo in 1863. Located at the east side of the Nile and the Tahrir Square near Nile Hilton Hotel, it is the one of the most famous museums around the world. It is a treasury of the relics of the ancient Egyptian civilization with a history of more than 3000 years. More than 300,000 items are collected here, but only 63,000 pieces are on show, taking up one fifth of the total amount. As the museum mainly collects the items during the Pharaoh Era, the Egyptians usually call it “The Pharaoh Museum”.
