NYC & Company and the Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration have teamed up to announce the first-ever city-to-city partnership between Shanghai and New York City to boost tourism to both destinations.
The two-year partnership includes outdoor media advertising campaigns in both cities, the sharing of best practices in tourism marketing and additional initiatives to drive tourism between Shanghai and New York City.
The new agreement marks the first time NYC & Company—New York City’s official destination marketing organization—has formed a partnership of this kind with any Chinese city.
With Shanghai’s tourism industry continuing to flourish over recent years due in part to the recent openings of the Shanghai Disney Resort and Shanghai Tower, the budding relationship between the cities is good news for both.
“China is a crucially important market for New York City tourism—with our new city-to-city partnership with Shanghai, we will be well positioned during the U.S.-China Tourism Year and beyond to capitalize on more visitations from China’s largest city,” NYC & Company CEO Fred Dixon said in a statement. “We’re incredibly honored to be working with SMTA on this worthwhile initiative to boost reciprocal tourism between Shanghai and New York City.”
In Shanghai, the city has already started promoting New York City in four major subway stations through August 11. On the other hand, New York will install 164 bus shelters from Sept. 26 to Oct. 23 to promote Shanghai.
The hope for New York City is to improve upon the record-breaking 59.7 million visitors expected this year, which includes 47 million domestic visitors and 12.7 million international visitors.
