Airport and government officials in the capital of Indonesia hope a new terminal will lure international airlines to the Jakarta airport and away from the larger airports of Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, USA Today reported.
Soekarno-Hatta International Airport opened the $560 million terminal on Tuesday, the newspaper said.
Garuda Indonesia is now offering domestic flights through Terminal 3 and will begin offering international flights next month, USA Today said.
"This terminal was built to change the image of the capital Jakarta," Indonesia’s transport minister, Budi Karya Sumadi, told USA Today.
Two old terminals will be refurbished at the airport later this year, expanding the airport’s capacity to 62 million passengers a year by early 2018, the newspaper reported. Roughly 54 million passengers traveled through Soekarno-Hatta airport in 2015.
An electric train is expected to be available to carry travelers from the airport to the city by early 2017, according to USA Today.
