Tivoli Gardens, originally named Copenhagen Summer Tivoli, has successfully introduced Christmas and Halloween seasons within the past 25 years. However, the first quarter of the year has been reserved for maintenance, new-builds and staff vacations for almost two centuries until 2018, the 175th anniversary year when Winter in Tivoli becomes a reality. Clad in winter attire, Tivoli opens about half its regular area to present activities for young and old alike.

Winter in Tivoli runs from 2 - 25 February 2018, thus spanning both the Danish school winter breaks, Valentine’s Day and Shrovetide, the traditional time in Denmark for kids to dress up and go trick-or-treating.

International light events

Winter in Tivoli has joined forces with Copenhagen’s February festival CPH Light Festival and will present a number of fun and fantastic light installations, some of which may only be seen during Winter in Tivoli (marked*).

Family fun

Tivoli’s new ice skating rink in front of the Nimb Hotel is expected to be quite the centerpiece of Winter in Tivoli. Equally spectacular is the new activity igloo with indoor fun and games for families. Tivoli’s 103-year-old wooden rollercoaster and several other rides will be open throughout Winter in Tivoli.

Ice skating is free of charge once admission to Tivoli has been paid (bring skates or hire on site). Igloo activities and rides require tickets or ride pass.

Family activities also include creative workshops, children’s theatre and an ‘ice’ maze.

From 10 –18 February, you can 'strike it rich' in sweets with the Danish version of a piñata party, Katten af tønden (“the cat off the barrel”), a classic Shrovetide tradition. There will be barrels for children of all ages, and children are welcome to dress up. A “cat queen” and “cat king” will be crowned in each age group every day.

Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day has become increasingly popular in Denmark. Tivoli’s restaurants promise romantic dinners, and throughout the gardens love is in the air in the days leading up to and on 14 February.

Those looking for cultural input can enjoy Chess – The Musical in the Tivoli Concert Hall until 17 February.
