Head of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation Vladislav Tretiak has announced plans to nominate St. Petersburg as a candidate for holding the World Ice hockey championship 2024.
"As we know, the World Junior Championship this year will be held in Chelyabinsk and Magnitogorsk. And also we want the adult World Championship in 2024 to be held in St. Petersburg. Another stadium is being built there, the infrastructure is improving. We have all the prerequisites and we will try to get an ability to hold the World Championship," said Vladislav Tretiak during the broadcast of the match for the third place of the Women's Youth World Championship in Dmitrov.
The world Championship in Dmitrov ended in victory of United States team over Sweden with a score of 9:3. Russian team in the match for the third place lost to Canada with a score of 1:5.
The President of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Rene Fasel has said that the organization is aware of Russia's planned application for hosting the Championship in 2024.
"Yes, we know that Russia is going to apply. But we don't know if it will be St. Petersburg or any other city," Fasel commented.
We remind that Petersburg already took the World Cup in the year 2000, as well as in 2016 jointly with Moscow.
