Sanya’s transport system is taking another stride forward with the city’s first tramcar, which underwent its first test run on February 1st, 2018, in preparation for the beginning of regular service in the near future.
The tramcar moved slowly through the city on a stretch from Jiefang Road to Yuxiu Road, with five stops on the route, including Jiefang Road Station, Sanya Hedong Road Station, Shuicheng Road Station, Fenghuang Road Station, and Yuxiu Road Station.
According to the Sanya Transport Bureau, the stretch from Jiefang Road to Yuxiu Road, which runs a length of 3.5 kilometers, is an experimental segment of the 8.37-km-long tramline, which will link the Sanya Railway Station and the downtown core.
The tramcar has a maximum operational speed of 50 to 70 kilometers per hour, but it will run at speeds between 20 and 30 kilometers per hour to ensure safety in the downtown area. For a single trip, a tramcar can carry a maximum capacity of 368 passengers. The fare for the tram service will be set at RMB 3 per person once the 3.5-km-long experimental tramline is officially put into service.
By the end of 2020, the city plans to build four tramlines with a total length of 60.6 kilometers. The tram lines will be used to supplement Sanya’s existing public transportation network.
