Adding further glitter to an already stellar line up, Elvis Costello, Angélique Kidjo, Gwenno and Susanne Sundfør are among the latest performers announced for Cardiff’s magical music and arts festival.
Taking place at various venues throughout the capital between 7–17 June 2018, the biennial Festival of Voice is a citywide celebration featuring performers from across the global arts scene. It’s a heady and endlessly fascinating in a combination of one-off musical performances, unique collaborations and inclusive community participation projects.
The latest additions to the bill include Elvis Costello & The Imposters, who will close the festival at the Millennium Centre on Sunday 17 June. With a career spanning 40 years and more than 30 albums, expect a set of gold-plated hits like Pump It Up, Oliver’s Army and Every Day I Write the Book from Costello’s extensive back catalogue.
On a totally different vibe, Angélique Kidjo will be performing her radical reinterpretation of the classic Talking Heads album 'Remain in Light' at the Millennium Centre on 9 June. Taking familiar songs like Once in a Lifetime and rebuilding them piece by piece, it promises to be an electrifying event. It’s already got David Byrne’s seal of approval, so expect big things.
Fresh from the success of her Cornish-language album 'Le Kov', Wales’ own Gwenno will take to the stage on 15 June with a specially commissioned piece celebrating the life of patchwork pioneer and poet Erica Huws. Accompanied by animation from Tad Davies, Gwenno will use electronics and her voice to explore the impact of motherhood on creativity and the parallels between creating modern electronic music using found sounds and the ritual of patchwork stitching.
Rounding off the slate of new announcements is Swedish synth-folker Susanne Sundfør, who will bring her unique voice to the New Theatre on 13 June. She’ll be joined by Novo Amor, the Welsh multi-instrumentalist also known as Ali Lacey.
These latest additions join a bill that already includes names like Patti Smith, Billy Bragg, Nadine Shah, Laura Viers, Karine Polwart and Gruff Rhys (in collaboration with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales), plus a host of others. Add in a range of theatre performances and large-scale public events and the Festival of Voice is shaping up to be one of the year’s unmissable arts gatherings.
And it’s not over. With a few more big announcements to come before things get underway in June, Festival of Voice still has some tricks up its sleeve. Stay tuned for further revelations.
