London City airport has reported a 50% reduction in passenger queue times one year after the introduction of advanced security scanners.

In April 2023, the airport became the first in the UK to fully deploy next-generation computed tomography (CT) scanners which allow travellers to keep liquids and laptops in their hand luggage as they pass through security.

Alison FitzGerald, interim co-chief executive and chief operating officer at the airport, said: “We are committed to delivering the quickest, easiest and most efficient airport experience in the UK, so we’re delighted with the results of our CT scanners rollout.”

Passengers flying from London City can bring bottles of liquid with a capacity of up to two litres, with the scanners capable of detecting prohibited items with greater accuracy than the previous technology.

London City said passenger feedback shows around 80% have been happy with their experience since the new scanners were installed.

Airports had previously been instructed to introduce the advanced scanners by June 1 this year, but the government announced last week that it was extending the deadline on a case-by-case basis.

The government has recommended that passengers should follow the existing rules as they prepare for airport security, or contact their airport or airline to find out the latest arrangements.

Since 2006, liquids have had to be kept in containers of up to 100ml and removed from hand luggage when passing through security. The containers must be displayed in a clear plastic bag.

London City has also reported that more than half of its passengers are now travelling for leisure and to visit friends and family.
